How about a treatment for fat reduction that is painless and safe? Doctor-supervised and directed? The answer is yes to all the above. Today, there is a safe treatment for fat reduction that doesn’t involve tedious surgery and drugs. How can something like this be? Thanks to the LipoLaser, or laser assisted fat loss technology, patients are able to lose between 7 and 21 inches of fat in targeted areas in just a little over a month. The treatment is simple, safe and effective. The LipoLaser is a cold laser light or Low Level Laser Technology (LLLT for short), applied directly to the skin, which causes the fat cells to open up and release their fat contents. This is the same process that takes place when you exercise. The water, glycerol, and free fatty acids leave the cell, and your fat cell shrinks. There are no cutting or invasive procedures involved. LipoLaser’s low level, laser technology has been studied and used for over 30 years for many biomedical purposes.

Our Approach:

Chiropractic is a healthcare discipline that is centered on the role of the spine and central nervous system in maintaining good health, and leveraging the recuperative power of the body to heal itself naturally and efficiently. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (of the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system)and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.

Chiropractors identify and correct the cause of health challenges which arise when misalignments of the vertebrae (the small bones that make up the spine) disrupt neurological communications between your brain and the cells, tissues, and organs of the body. Chiropractors correct these misalignments by gently adjusting the position of the vertebrae of the spine, reducing or eliminating neuropathy (changes in the pathology of the nerves) thus allowing your body to properly self-regulate, adapt and heal.

Relief Care

As a new patient, you obviously have pain or concerns that need to be addressed promptly. At first you may need to visit our office two or three times weekly, this will allow for concentrated treatments to reduce or eliminate the symptoms that are occurring. This phase of chiropractic care is considered the Relief Care Phase.

Many people go about their daily lives pain-free and without any symptoms believing they are healthy, the truth is sometimes pain alone is not the indicator that something is wrong. Many health conditions have no symptoms whatsoever but can be very serious conditions, such as, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc.

Spinal problems are one of the few conditions that will generally be accompanied with pain as a first symptom, and can be reduced or eliminated through chiropractic treatments.

Corrective Care

After receiving Relief Care and eliminating or reducing your symptoms, some may believe there is no need for further treatments, actually the Corrective Care phase is a very important step needed to restore, heal, and prevent symptoms from recurring. Your condition will determine the amount of treatments needed to complete the healing process. To help improve and accelerate the healing process you can perform certain exercises at the clinic, or in the comfort of your own home.

This phase could take a few months or more depending on the seriousness of your condition. Soreness or flare-ups may occur and are completely normal.

Wellness Care

Now that you are healed and feel better than ever, routine chiropractic care will help to ensure that this feeling will never fade away. A program including regular adjustments, exercise, and a healthy diet will help ensure the health of your musculoskeletal system.

The Wellness Care phase will give you the benefit of living life to the fullest.
Children also benefit from regular spinal exams!

It seems children never run out of energy, they go all day long running, jumping, and playing hard. Sometimes all this physical activity puts stress on the spinal nerves; this may lead to lowering a child’s resistance and open the door for many illnesses.

The slightest misalignment can cause a child to suffer from adult type problems, such as headaches, back pain, poor concentration, irritability, etc. and for many, a simple, painless spinal exam will allow your Chiropractor to find, and treat if necessary any misalignments.

Chiropractic Care for children is much more than just spinal exams. Your Chiropractor can also examine and monitor the growth of your child’s body, address important nutritional needs, offer correct exercise programs, and help to prepare your child for a healthy adulthood.

The Basics of Fibromyalgia

Modern research indicates fibromyalgia is a stress-related condition—a cousin of sorts to Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (often referred to as simply ‘lupus’) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In all three conditions possess the same predominantly female distribution, chronic fatigue, sleep disturbances, irritable bowel, as well as many other similarities. All three are also known to result from an abnormal stress response in the body. With Lupus, however, it is the immune system that is primarily affected, causing an auto immune reaction which attacks your healthy tissues. With fibromyalgia, metabolic abnormalities are the primary concern. These metabolic changes are the result of a stress-induced decrease in blood flow to an area of the brain called the pituitary. This in turn causes a decrease in a number of vital hormones, such as the growth-releasing hormone (somatotropin) and the thyroid-stimulating hormone. These hormonal changes lead to abnormal muscle healing, borderline or full-blown hypothyroid, and memory and cognitive changes.

One of the major physical abnormalities with fibromyalgia lies in the muscle itself, with a buildup of a protein called “Ground Substance.” Normally found in muscle, bone and connective tissue all over the body, Ground Substance is responsible for tissue strength and is less susceptible to tearing. In a normal person, when a muscle is injured, the muscle tissue itself is able to regenerate and, over time, completely heal itself. In a person with fibromyalgia, the muscle is unable to heal. Instead, an abnormally large amount of Ground Substance builds up in the injured area. It is this Ground Substance, coupled with local muscle spasms, that creates the muscle ‘knots’ associated with fibromyalgia.

A number of tests can rule out other disorders. Our thorough examination will reveal whether a person has the characteristic tender areas on the back of the neck, shoulders, sternum, lower back, hips, shins, elbows or knees. Unlike its cousin lupus, there are currently no diagnostic laboratory tests for fibromyalgia. Thus, some doctors unfortunately conclude that a patient’s pain is not real, or that very little can be done.

With HealthWorks Wellness, this is not always the case. A combination of chiropractic, trigger point therapy and lifestyle changes has proven to be very effective in not only decreasing the severity and duration of physical pain, but also the disability of fibromyalgia.

Wellness at EMTEQ…

EMTEQ’s 2012 wellness focuses have been chosen by the employees, in conjunction with EMTEQ’s annual Health Risk Assessment, to be centered around nutrition education, weight loss, and stress management. EMTEQ’s Wellness Committee began in Fall of 2010 with focus on awareness of wellness in the organization. The Committee hosted numerous events to increase awareness throughout 2011. In Fall of 2011, EMTEQ hosted its first annual Health Risk Assessment for all full-time employees. The mission for the committee over the coming years is to have fewer, but larger, more impactful events around the wellness focus areas that can better the health of the employees and their families. The Wellness Fair is the first event of the 2012 year.

Content from: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

What is peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy describes damage to the peripheral nervous system, the vast communications network that transmits information from the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system) to every other part of the body. Peripheral nerves also send sensory information back to the brain and spinal cord, such as a message that the feet are cold or a finger is burned. Damage to the peripheral nervous system interferes with these vital connections. Like static on a telephone line, peripheral neuropathy distorts and sometimes interrupts messages between the brain and the rest of the body.

Because every peripheral nerve has a highly specialized function in a specific part of the body, a wide array of symptoms can occur when nerves are damaged. Some people may experience temporary numbness, tingling, and pricking sensations (paresthesia), sensitivity to touch, or muscle weakness. Others may suffer more extreme symptoms, including burning pain (especially at night), muscle wasting, paralysis, or organ or gland dysfunction. People may become unable to digest food easily, maintain safe levels of blood pressure, sweat normally, or experience normal sexual function. In the most extreme cases, breathing may become difficult or organ failure may occur.

Some forms of neuropathy involve damage to only one nerve and are called mononeuropathies. More often though, multiple nerves affecting all limbs are affected-called polyneuropathy. Occasionally, two or more isolated nerves in separate areas of the body are affected-called mononeuritis multiplex.

In acute neuropathies, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, symptoms appear suddenly, progress rapidly, and resolve slowly as damaged nerves heal. In chronic forms, symptoms begin subtly and progress slowly. Some people may have periods of relief followed by relapse. Others may reach a plateau stage where symptoms stay the same for many months or years. Some chronic neuropathies worsen over time, but very few forms prove fatal unless complicated by other diseases. Occasionally the neuropathy is a symptom of another disorder.

In the most common forms of polyneuropathy, the nerve fibers (individual cells that make up the nerve) most distant from the brain and the spinal cord malfunction first. Pain and other symptoms often appear symmetrically, for example, in both feet followed by a gradual progression up both legs. Next, the fingers, hands, and arms may become affected, and symptoms can progress into the central part of the body. Many people with diabetic neuropathy experience this pattern of ascending nerve damage.

How are the peripheral neuropathies classified?

More than 100 types of peripheral neuropathy have been identified, each with its own characteristic set of symptoms, pattern of development, and prognosis. Impaired function and symptoms depend on the type of nerves-motor, sensory, or autonomic-that are damaged. Motor nerves control movements of all muscles under conscious control, such as those used for walking, grasping things, or talking. Sensory nerves transmit information about sensory experiences, such as the feeling of a light touch or the pain resulting from a cut. Autonomic nerves regulate biological activities that people do not control consciously, such as breathing, digesting food, and heart and gland functions. Although some neuropathies may affect all three types of nerves, others primarily affect one or two types. Therefore, doctors may use terms such as predominantly motor neuropathy, predominantly sensory neuropathy, sensory-motor neuropathy, or autonomic neuropathy to describe a patient’s condition.

Article by Donna Frake of Living Lake Country

When it comes to losing weight, there is no ‘easy’ cure, but for a Pewaukee couple, a doctor-supervised weight loss program provided the answers they were looking for. Susan, 62, and Craig, 64, Kuhlenbeck were ready to shed the excess weight they had been carrying.

“I have struggled with it for many, many years,” said Susan. “I have tried every type of weight loss program. I’d lose weight, but it would all come back, plus more. I came to the point where I thought this is always how I will be. Then this came up. I was skeptical at first,” she said.

It’s easy to see why the couple might doubt the effectiveness of the diet plan that boasts that “in less than two months you can lose up to 40 pounds with moderate diet modifications, no exercise, no shakes and a proven weight loss solution.”

“It was a radical program, and for a year now, I have kept the weight off. I lost 36 pounds on it and have easily maintained it for a year,” she offered.

Craig offers the same opinion. “Like Susan, I have been battling this for a long time. If you can name it, I’ve been on it or looked at it,” he said of other weight loss programs. Craig said he joined an area weight loss competition in 2008, where his weight dropped in six months from 302 pounds to 219 pounds. “That was nice weight loss. The problem was I was working out four to six hours a day. In my 60s that’s not a lifestyle I wanted to, or could, maintain. It wasn’t realistic. When the program ended, I put most of the weight back on. I was 276 pounds and having a lot of problems with my knee,” he explained.

The couple was going to the Healthworks Wellness Center in Pewaukee for help pain issues. They were patients of Dr. Shane Huber for knee pain and other issues. He told them about the weight loss program and the couple signed on.

According to information from HealthWorks Wellness Center, it has “successfully helped over 350 people in the last year, ranging from 18 to 78 years old. In addition to losing pounds and inches other benefits include: an increase in energy, a reduction in prescription medications, pain relief to achy joints, and a dramatic reduction in the risk of diabetes.”

“The results are amazing,” Huber said. “So far, everyone that has followed it properly, has achieved weight loss,” he added. Huber said that Craig lost approximately 40 pounds his first time through the program. Continuing to eat the way he should, he decided to try another round, and lost an addition 30.

“At the time I started, I was 276 pounds and I ended at 202,” Craig said. “It was easy to do if you are willing to make the change and do what is necessary to do. The changes came about easily and going forward I don’t see the rebound I saw in the past,” he said.

Starting over

Susan said she believes all the dieting they had done previously had caused problems for them trying to losing weight. “Because we have been up and down with weight loss, our metabolism was out of shape. This is supposed to restart your metabolism. We’re very excited and still looking good and feeling good,” she said.

Craig said, it is “technically, a 42-day program. The first two days are the fun days; you eat 3,000 to 5,000 calories. He said that intake sets the metabolism for the low calorie diet for the next 40 days while taking the sublingual drops. They took five drops, three times a day as part of the program. The oral drops are the hormone HCG. Huber said the hormone triggers the body to release fat, and resets the metabolism by the conclusion of the program.

He emphasizes the importance of being under a physician’s supervision during the process to monitor progress and make adjustments as necessary. “Breakfast is coffee, tea or water – you’re not eating any food,” Craig said.

The diet consists of a total of approximately 500 calories per day. Huber said people enrolled in the program eat four ounces of protein, fruit, and vegetables in addition to a carbohydrate at each meal. The doctor said each patient is evaluated before starting the program. “We do a complete health history,” he said. “The jest of it is that the drops are making the body release fat that is stored in the body. Although you are only taking in 500 calories, you are burning 2,500,” he said.

Susan said she was surprised by her own reaction to the restricted calories intake. “I was not hungry and I had much more energy. I was skeptical because I eat breakfast, it was quite amazing, and the weight just came off,” she said.

Both Susan and Craig say they suffered no adverse side effects from the hormone. “I think it detoxes your system and you feel alert and energetic,” Susan offered.

Making good choices

Craig said they both continue to make smarter nutritional choices. “I don’t sit and eat five or six brats at a time,” he said.

Susan agreed.

“It encouraged us to eat healthy meals. At the end of the six weeks, you don’t have cravings for some of the things you craved before,” she said.

But even the occasional splurge does not cause them concern.

“I just got back from vacation in Maine. I ate more than normal, but I did not put on the pounds.” She said vacations used to mean a five to 10 pound weight gain. “I don’t feel deprived,” she said. Both say that 80 to 90 percent of their food choices now are healthy nutritious meals.

“It’s a lifestyle change. If you were eating junk, then had a weight loss, and went back to eating junk, you will put it on,” Craig cautioned. He said he wants to emphasize that people need to follow the program “the way it is laid out. I want to emphasize that – the way it is laid out,” he reiterated. “We really followed it exactly,” Susan said.

After the six week diet, the couple said there was three week period where they slowly added things back. “It’s a stabilization phase, then the maintenance phase,” Craig said.

The couple has seen other health benefits. “I don’t need the braces on my knees anymore,” Craig said. And Susan has been able to return to running. “I did a half-marathon in August and am doing another one in November,” she said. Susan said that while she was a runner “years ago,” she couldn’t run at her previous weight. “Now I am up early and working out and feeling good about it. It is so much easier to work out without the extra weight,” she added.

Susan said there is positive reinforcement in the way people have responded. “I have clients I see twice a year and they’re shocked. I get compliments every day; it’s very nice,” she noted. “I see these pictures of me (from before) and where I am now and I can’t believe the difference,” Craig said.
